Taxman 2022

Version 4.0 is Ready!

Version 4.0 corrects some erroneous error messages, but nothing critical. Version 3.0 corrects a problem on MB Credits that locked up the program. Version 2.0 changes capital cost allowance on the rental, business and farming forms. If you are installing Version 4.0 over 3.0 there's no problem. But if you are installing Version 4.0 over Versions 2.0 or 1.0 then you must change your main data file 22tables.mdb. You do that by first renaming or moving the old 22tables.mdb (which will hide it so the install program will install a new file). When you first run Taxman22 Version 4.0, on the menu use 'Tools\Data Transfer\Get All from same year' to copy in all the old data from the old 22tables.mdb.

Last year we learned that one hiccup in our global economy and our money loses 10% of its value. Did a virus give us inflation? It's a fragile world.
I'm the same age as both Putin and President Xi. But while I'm fumbling along with my little tax program, those guys are trying to conquer the planet. I don't feel old, but I am — so I had to re-evaluate what to do with the time I have left. I'm aiming for smelling the roses and lowering the anxiety and stress. But Putin and Xi are going the other way, grabbing for everlasting glory. They too can look in the mirror and see that time is running out (even the Queen of England ends up dead), but power, pride and plastic surgery changes everything.

I had always thought that once everyone was making money off of everyone else, we'd have peace. But Putin and Xi have proven me dead wrong. If we don't get rid of our hierarchical systems where one guy can set the world on fire, we're doomed. People are just too vain and stupid.
WWI was started by Czar Nicholas II who backed the Serbs even though a Serbian terrorist murdered the heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Austria had invaded Serbia in the past, but this time we ended up with millions dead. Now, a hundred years on, we have the new Russian czar making another awful mistake.
Who would have guessed that given the latest slings and stones David can actually fight off Goliath. In WWI they had massive artillery, but they didn't have radios. The way to win was to fire your artillery just in front of your advancing troops. But if your troops were out of sight, you were down to using pigeons, dogs and human runners to direct your artillery fire. So the farther your guys moved into the clear sight of the enemy's artillery, the more impotent your artillery became.
Today, we have radios, satellites, drones and some artillery shells can find a target all by themselves. But the cost is horrendous. So much energy, precious resources and people's lives are wasted making all our weapons. I'd like to hope that these toys will have a long-lasting effect and warn off any other bullies from starting a war. But whatever good comes out of this war it won't compensate for the destruction of Ukraine and the loss of over a quarter-million souls.

(I have an essay this year too ...)

Before mailing in that tax return, just to be safe, come back and download the latest upgrade.

Your browser or security software doesn't know about my program and it will warn you that Taxman could be dangerous. Taxman isn't dangerous. I live in Victoria, not Kazakhstan. To quote Nixon: "I am Not a crook." You have to either tell the blocking program that Taxman is safe, or ignore the warning, or temporarily turn down your level of security.

Warning! As stated above, if you have Version 2.0 or 1.0 installed, before installing Version 4.0 you must first rename or move the old 22tables.mdb (which will hide it so the install program will install a new file). When you first run Taxman22 Verson 4.0, on the menu use 'Tools\Data Transfer\Get All from same year' to copy in all the old data from the old 22tables.mdb.

If you already have the full Taxman program installed on your computer (it doesn't matter which year just so long as it works), then you only need:

Taxman!  Taxman2022 Upgrade Version 4.0 (22setup4.exe, 2.2 MB)
Revised Apr 12, 2023, see Bugs and Versions for more.

Clicking the link below takes you to Google Drive where you have to press the 'Download' button. You then go to a page telling you the file can't be scanned for viruses — press 'Download anyway'. Then a pop-up appears and you hit 'Save File'.

Download Upgrade Version 4.0
from Google Drive!

Or, click the link below and go to pCloud where there is one file listed. Click 'Direct download' and the job's done. If a pop-up appears asking you to register just click the 'X' at the top-right of the pop-up (or register if you want to).

Download Upgrade Version 4.0
from pCloud!

After downloading, just double-click 22setup4.exe to install. A shortcut to run the program will appear on your Start Menu, your Desktop and in the folder where the program was installed. Your data files are 22tables.mdb and taxbiz.mdb — back'em up! During an install your data files, if they already exist, are never replaced, but an uninstall will delete them forevermore.
If this is this year's first install and you used Taxman in the past, go to 'Tools\Data Transfer' on the menu and press 'Get Basics from past year' to update 22tables.mdb with the unlikely to change stuff in 21tables.mdb. After Get Basics runs you'll be asked if you want to update taxbiz.mdb, say No because the structure of taxbiz.mdb is unchanged so the best bet is to hide the new taxbiz.mdb and then point the program to the old taxbiz.mdb (look up 'Data Transfer' in the Help index for more).

Otherwise you must get the full program, the El Gordo version:

Taxman!   Taxman2022 Full Version 4.0 (22txmf4.exe, 7.5 MB)

Download Full Version 4.0
from Google Drive!

Or, click the link below and go to pCloud where there is one file listed. Click 'Direct download' and the job's done. If a pop-up appears asking you to register just click the 'X' at the top-right of the pop-up (or register if you want to).

Download Full Version 4.0
from pCloud!

After downloading, double-click 22txmf4.exe to install. The first time you install Taxman, if asked, do not replace any newer files that you already have on your computer. Only replace files if Taxman fails to work. Save the file 22txmf4.exe, it may not always be on the internet.

    Announcing!       Notably New for 2022

I've added an Envelope button on Persons, which opens a form for printing addresses on any envelope you can squeeze through your printer (Inch'Allah).

If you are using the split-pension form (T1032), I've changed the Print Menu to automatically select to print a copy for your spouse. You no longer need to separately print out a T1032 — should have done that years ago.

As mentioned above, CRA has changed how CCA is calculated on the rental, business and farming forms. And if you're a construction worker, on the Employment Expenses form (T777), there's a labour mobility deduction to compensate for certain temporary relocation expenses.

NL, NS and PE have joined AB, SK, MB and ON in the climate action incentive. Schedule 14 has been eliminated and the checkbox indicating you live outside a CMA, except for PE which doesn't need it, is now on Page 2 of the return. For some provinces it looks on the screen like there's nothing below Page 1, but scroll down and you'll find Page 2. And remember, both spouses must check the box on their returns.

Also on Page 2, for ON and NU, are checkboxes allowing CRA to pass your name and addresses on to the organ and tissue donation program. They say it's just to send you info and John Cleese will not show up asking for your liver. There's a Yes and a No box so you have to give an answer.

NS has a new credits form, which has on it the new children's credit. PE now has a credit for search and rescue, and to make things even more convoluted MB has a renters credit. Proving that ON had an election, they have the most new credits and they also win the Audacity Prize.

ON has a jobs training credit that Taxman should automatically fill in.

If you are 70+, ON will give you a kickback on your medical expenses. It's called the "care at home credit" but the rules don't say you have to have a home. You tick the box on ON Credits and Taxman will figure things out provided that both spouse's net incomes, medical expenses and dates of death are fixed in stone. If things do change, double-click the control to reset things.

ON's most audacious staycation credit shows how the rich view our tax system. How can it be fair for the government to take money off of the working-poor, who can't afford a vacation, and give it to those who can afford to travel? Or why should anyone not benefiting from this cunning plan chip in a dime to someone else's holiday? How can Doug Ford waste a penny of tax revenue when the average emergency-room wait time at SickKids is 12 hours? And they re-elected the guy!
Regardless, Taxman will do the math after you've entered the total accommodation, less any assistance, and clicked one of the two boxes. I don't have a worksheet for your expenses because you would only go to the effort of filling in a worksheet if you got audited. Hopefully that won't happen!

                  Bugs and Versions

Trump gets to lounge around at Mar-a-Lago, while his 75-year-old accountant gets to serve five months in Rikers Island jail, followed by five years of supervised release. Plus he has to pay taxes and penalties totalling US$2 million. And there's new criminal charges on the way.
It's the rich what gets the pleasure. It's the accountants what gets the blame. Isn't it a blooming shame?
